Tamlite Environmental - Lighting for the Planet

Tamlite Lighting has a vested interest in promoting good sustainability practice within the company and the wider lighting industry. As one of the largest privately-owned UK manufacturers, we have a responsibility to ensure our processes, technologies and products are in line with our commitment to ensuring a healthy planet for all.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Recover.

At Tamlite, we want to help reach the targets set for net zero. We want to reduce; lowering the amount of waste produced, reuse; using materials repeatedly, recycle; using materials to make new products, and recover; recovering energy from waste. That is what we want to continue to do and improve on, whether it be in our design stage, production or delivery.

TM66 is a Technical Memorandum (TM) and provides a framework for specifiers, manufacturers, contractors, and facilities managers to design, manufacture, and use lighting products in a more sustainable way. It sets out minimum requirements for product design, materials, manufacturing processes, end-of-life management, and circularity reporting.

Tamlite is a founding member of the TM66 Assured Beta team, for Circular Economy Luminaire Assessments.

The TM66 Assured Product Verification Scheme is an innovative initiative developed and fulfilled by the LIA (Lighting Industry Association) and endorsed by CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers). This scheme aims to advance circular economy practices within the lighting industry.

Bronze Medal For SSV

In November 2023 we were awarded the EcoVadis bronze medal for our efforts in sustainability and social values.

This remarkable achievement reflects our dedication to creating a positive impact on the environment and society as a whole.

Sustainability and social values are two inextricably linked concepts. Sustainability is the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Social values are the shared beliefs and principles that guide our interactions with each other and with the world around us.

Let's Talk About Light

Encouraging the conversation surrounding the deeper understanding of the far-reaching impacts of intelligently considered light and lighting is now more important than ever. We brought our industry together for a highly successful one-day thought leadership event at London's iconic venue The Shangri-La The Shard in October 2022 - and we will be facilitating similar events in 2023 and beyond.

In response to the climate emergency, Tamlite has set a goal to become a net-zero emission organisation by 2040, with work ongoing to try and bring that forward significantly as we lock-in progress on relevant fronts.

Planet Mark Certified

Tamlite achieved a Planet Mark certification by reliably reporting a reduction in our overall carbon footprint and engaging our stakeholders. It has been recognised that there has been an overall -13.5% Carbon reduction relative to turnover . This certification aligns with our sustainable development goals, as well as Planet Mark's, with all parties recognising that transparent communication is essential for transformational change.

With this mark, we are continuing our journey towards positive change through our actions, people and reach.

Product Development

We are developing more and more lighting solutions that tie in with the values of the circular economy, ensuring luminaires are manufactured using the highest quality, sustainable materials, and also removing as much plastic from our packaging as possible.

One specific project Tamlite made a priority recently was to design and bring to the market a locally produced, sustainable, circular economy friendly luminaire.

Introducing; CIRCA. Award winning in energy efficiency, this is a luminaire produced locally, using local sustainable materials, and designed for less manufacturing, less materials, and less waste.

Lighting for Decarbonisation

The drive towards reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency continues across the built environment. The public sector will play a key role in achieving this and small changes can make a big difference. LED technology can reduce energy consumption by 60% - 80%, but as well as generating savings, upgrades should be viewed as a key component of any decarbonisation plan allowing organisations to make a long-term climate commitment.

Award Winning in Sustainability

Tamlite won two sustainability awards in 2021.

We were named Sustainable/Ethical Manufacturer of the Year at the Made in the Midlands Awards, and achieved the Circular Economy Initiative award at the National Recycling Awards!

With help from our sister company Waste Experts, we have been able to continue to meet our corporate and social responsibilities and progress towards our Circular Economy aims.

Retrofit for Decarbonisation

NET-ZERO targets, and the importance of retrofit lighting schemes to achieving them, cannot be understated. Replacing existing inefficient systems with the latest generation of LED luminaires, lighting controls and wireless systems is key to progressing our collective sustainability efforts and achieving ambitious net-zero goals.

Recycling Capabilities

Tamlite Environmental offers a complete recycling service when carrying out lighting projects and upgrades. We are committed to reducing landfill waste through specialist recycling means, ensuring that previous luminaires and lamps are effectively recycled and brought back into the Circular Economy, or are responsibly disposed of if required.

With over 2 million tonnes of electrical waste discarded every year, the need for efficient recycling is clear. Tamlite Environmental, in partnership with Waste Experts (EWRG), has safely recycled over 75 million lamps since 2000, and continues to provide an outstanding WEEE recovery service today.

Blue is the new Green

We have only one planet, and it is critical that all of us take charge and do what we can to reduce our waste.

Recycling only goes so far. It is paramount that manufacturers and producers are more responsible, and design away non-essential plastic and other non-recyclable materials from their products and packaging, in order to reduce pollution in our rivers and oceans, as well as our reliance on landfill.

Take a look at how Tamlite dramatically reduced its reliance on plastic by investing in alternative sustainable packaging materials – saving more than 10,000kg in plastic in 12 months.

The Circular Economy

Tamlite has an experienced product design team, focused on creating luminaires that align with the principles of the Circular Economy.

The Ellen Macarthur Foundation, a leading figure within the Circular Economy, suggests that designing products with materials geared around longevity can reduce carbon emissions by over 40%.

Tamlite manufactures fittings that are built using quality materials, designed to ensure the internal components can be easily changed and maintained in situ. Tamlite’s CYCLONE range of industrial luminaires is exemplary in being easily maintained – the inner gear tray is accessible, so can be removed and replaced in situ when required, leaving the external body in place.

The UK Manufacturing Supply Chain

It is critical that manufacturers, designers and specifiers all take it upon themselves to carry out the most sustainable processes possible when delivering lighting solutions.

As a British manufacturer, Tamlite sources its materials from experienced local suppliers, and is well-placed to integrate with every link in the supply chain – from consultants and specifiers to contractors and end users to deliver sustainable lighting solutions.

Smart Lighting for Sustainable Buildings

80% of the worlds buildings that will be inhabited in 2050 have already been built. Sustainability and achieving carbon neutral, net-zero and circular economy targets over the next several decades must come from effective retrofit solutions.

As the most fundamental building service, the latest generation of smart lighting networks focus on delivering expansive wireless control of lighting systems, data collection and building management – all for the buildings in which we currently live, work and learn.

Our collective sustainability responsibility

Are you aware of your responsibilities when replacing lighting systems and undertaking lighting projects? Everyone in the supply chain is tasked with ensuring that the solutions provided to customers are sustainable, and that the replaced system is correctly stored, disposed and recycled.

Poor sustainability practices

Requirements include:

  • Compliant storage
  • Responsible disposal and processing
  • Up to date paperwork
  • Approved treatment partner

Tamlite is calling upon contractors to review their current processes regarding WEEE waste, to make sure that we are all behaving responsibly, and to ensure compliance across the board. Download our free checklist, to make sure your next project is fully compliant.
