Crawley Hospital
Award-Winning Lighting Solution at NHS Crawley Hospital.
Crawley Hospital, founded in 1967, services the busy town of Crawley in West Sussex. Offering a full complement of healthcare services, it has undergone a widescale overhaul to the wards, corridors and offices. As part of this refurbishment, the lighting system was identified as needing a substantial upgrade to meet modern efficiency and aesthetic standards.
To address these needs, building managers Morgan Sindall partnered with CBG Consultants design and deliver a specialised lighting scheme throughout the Stroke and Dove Wards. Tamlite Lighting was specified for the project.
Stanley Tettey, Principal Engineer for CBG Consultants, said, “We chose Tamlite for three key reasons: their product quality, competitive pricing, and the excellent support we receive from their lighting engineers. We brought a Tamlite Engineer into the London office and developed a comprehensive plan for the new lighting scheme.”
Energy Savings, Improved Aesthetics, and Lower Maintenance Costs
The primary aim of the project was to achieve energy savings compared to the previous lighting system. Additionally, the upgraded lighting was design to reduce maintenance costs for the management team. A further benefit for Crawley Hospital was the enhanced aesthetics, which are particularly important for the waiting rooms and patient areas.
Mick Allen, Project Manager at Morgan Sindall, commented, “We can see a big difference, both visually and economically. One of the main reasons we looked to change the lighting is to reduce running costs, and we’re already seeing savings." Mick continued by saying, “We are delighted with how it has turned out, everything that Tamlite said they would deliver has been delivered. And we are very happy with the extended warranty that we get on the products as well, so that made it much easier for us to use Tamlite for this project.”
Advanced Lighting Controls
The lighting scheme incorporated advanced controls tailored to the hospital’s needs. One of the key requirements in the wards was to provide dimming technology, for the sleeping areas in the wards at night. Tamlite luminaires are programmed to dim to 20% brightness at night, ensuring patient comfort while retaining flexibility to increase brightness when necessary.
In contrast, the nurse call stations required full lighting output through the day and night. As a result, Tamlite’s flexible Vision Lighting Controls provided the hospital with an adaptable solution, delivering the precise lighting required for each environment.
Healthcare Lighting Solution
Tamlite specified IP rated modules in the wards to facilitate easy cleaning and to support infection control, a critical consideration in healthcare settings. In waiting rooms, stylish downlights and linear modular fittings create a welcoming, calming atmosphere, essential for patient and visitor comfort.
Tamlite also delivered a wide-scale emergency lighting network, including signage and escape route lighting. This system ensures that staff and patients can safely make their way out of the hospital in the event of a severe emergency or loss of mains power.
Recognition for Excellence
The success of Crawley Hospital’s refurbishment project has been celebrated with the prestigious 2024 IHEEM Healthcare Estates Award for Refurbishment Project of the Year. The upgraded Community Diagnostic Centre, with Tamlite Lighting as a key part of the solution, played a pivotal role in achieving this recognition.
Principal Engineer at CBG Consultant, Stanley Tettey remarked, “It was a pleasure to work with Tamlite on this project. Their bespoke fittings and exceptional services contributed to a successful project, that has now been recognised with this awarded.”
Crawley Hospital’s refurbishment is a testament to the transformative impact of high-performance lighting solutions.
