Knife Angel Statue – Sandwell

Sandwell Council and the Dodd Group collaborated to display the Knife Angel Statue outside the Council House from 30th September to 31st October 2024 as part of its 2024 tour. The aim was to promote awareness and help reduce knife crime in the area.

Project Overview

Tamlite Lighting proudly supported the Knife Angel Statue in Sandwell by donating three Frontier floodlight luminaires to illuminate the sculpture at night. The Knife Angel, made from over 100,000 seized blades by artist Alfie Bradley in 2018, raises awareness of the devastating impact of violent crime and to advocate for social change. It also serves as a memorial for victims of violence.

Design Considerations

The lighting design was developed to enhance the texture and detail. Three Frontier floodlights were strategically positioned around the statue—two at the wings to highlight the outstretched hands. and one at the rear for a full 360-degree view. Additionally, a warm white (3000K) colour temperature was selected to give the statue a welcoming yet impactful presence at night.

Partnership and Impact

The Dodd Group donated their engineers’ time to install the Tamlite-supplied lighting. Matt Lewis, Managing Director of Property Services at Dodd Group, noted the Knife Angel’s importance as an icon against knife crime. He commented, “We donated our engineers’ time to make the Knife Angel visible at night, helping to provoke thought and encourage positive change.”

Furthermore, this installation is part of the wider Knife Angel Memorial Tour 2024, aiming to raise awareness across the UK. The combined efforts of Tamlite and Dodd Group have not only enhanced the visual impact of the Knife Angel, but also contributed to the prevention of knife crime through art. The statue creates a thought-provoking experience for all visitors, encouraging reflection on the importance of combatting violence and fostering a safer community.

Therefore, this collaboration with the British Ironwork Centre, Sandwell Council and Dodd Group amplified the statue’s powerful message. Also, it enhances its visibility and emotional impact on the importance of preventing knife crime and fostering a safer community.
