Wellbeing for Urban

Lighting can enhance wellbeing in environments where we spend much of our time, whether its where we work, learn or live – but it’s also crucial to maintain our wellbeing wherever we find ourselves. In external environments such as walkways, car parks and residential areas, lighting is fundamental to making us feel safe and secure, reducing the stress and anxieties that come with dark outdoor spaces.

Safety Outdoors

Whether walking home, to a car, in somewhere entirely familiar or otherwise, urban lighting is central to making us feel safe outdoors. Improved spacings and illumination levels can transform even the darkest, most shadowy places feel bright, open and safe – enhancing our feeling of security and, as a result, our wellbeing.

Night time crime falls by 39% in areas with street lighting, compared to areas without street lighting.

Controlling Light Pollution

Whilst lighting has a responsibility to improve the wellbeing of those outside, it also must be correctly deployed so as to avoid spill onto those who live, work or play nearby. Particularly important in residential areas, optical control and well-designed urban lighting solutions are vital to reduce light pollution into the night sky and minimise intrusive illumination into people’s homes.
